Earlier this year, 18 people got together at the beach to play some volleyball, hurl some javelins, and wrestle a bit. Fun, right? Well, they were nude and it was Malaysia, and when the government saw the video of their shenanigans, several participants were fined and jailed for 30 days (while the videographer got six months).

Since Malaysia is a highly repressive country with limited freedom of expression, and San Francisco’s progressive streak and streaking streak will use any excuse for an enjoyable exercise in solidarity, our own nudists are organizing another “Malaysian Nude Beach Games” on Saturday at Baker Beach.

It wouldn’t be the first time, SF Weekly reported, as something similar took place in 2008 (see video above). There’s going to be ten events – 11 if someone remembers to bring a tug-of-war rope – including Greco-Roman wrestling, discus, a 100-meter paired wheelbarrow race, and my personal favorite, the 50-meter crabwalk. Winners get a photo of the Malaysian flag, and there’s a body-painting competition afterwards, in which the use of kelp is encouraged. If you’re the type to use any pretext whatsoever to disrobe, this protest might be the one for you.

When the Board of Supervisors banned most public nudity last year, they had to know they’d be inviting a lot more bare-assery in San Francisco. While a warm spell like the one we’re currently luxuriating in is guaranteed to bring out all those dudes who strut down the street testing the tensile strength of their penis sheaths, it’s always better to whip it out for a cause, right?
